Junk Mail

coupons_edited_edited.jpg

Let's be real

Everyday, you walk down to the mailbox, reach in to take out a sheaf of paper that you barely even look at, and then toss it right back in the trash

On average, a person receives 41 pounds of junk mail a year

Overall, that's 75 BILLION pieces of advertising mail

But, we recycle...so It can't all be that bad?

Besides being an IMMENSE annoyance and an invasion of privacy, it is also horrible for the environment

Only 40% of the mail is recycled properly, so 60% ends up in landfills.

Furthermore, the recycling process includes:

Collection

De-inking

Water + Chemicals to convert

Re-Inking

Transporation/Delivery

The water, energy, electricity, time, and effort that goes into the process itself results in 51.5 million tons of carbon emissions a year

What can you do?

There is currently no law in place that prohibits junk mail if the receiver does not want it.

I want to get this issue to my Senator's attention so that this may become a bill.

Until then

As a temporary solution, there are some things you can do.

NOTE: The following options do NOT enforce any law that requires junk mailers to stop sending you mail. They are simply provided your address and the choice of whether to stop or not remains with them. However, it is highly recommended that you do it, because it can significantly reduce the flow of junk mail

1. DMA Choice

Can potentially stop all junk mail

Cost: $2 for 5 years

Time to stop: Minimum 90 day period before flow is reduced

2. Catalog Choice

Opt out of any catalogs or magazines you wish to not receive

3. Opt Out Prescreen

4. Individually Request Mailers

Almost every local advertiser sends return stamps with their mail. You can write back to the mailers and request to be taken off their list.
